Female World Title Fight Heads Emanuel Steward Tribute Card at Pechanga

Exactly one year to the day the great and beloved boxing trainer Emanuel Steward passed away, a fight card in his honor takes place and features a light flyweight world title bout between Amaris Quintana and Sindy Amador.

Steward staged numerous fight cards at Pechanga Resort and Casino, and tonight (Friday Oct. 25), on a boxing card promoted by Roy Englebrecht Promotions and DLA Entertainment LLC, Riverside’s Amador (10-1) faces San Diego’s Quintana (6-1-2) for the vacant IBFA junior flyweight world title.

Detroit’s Steward would have loved staging the female world title fight. He was a big supporter of women’s boxing and contributed to the world’s greatest female prizefighter Lucia Rijker. On many occasions he put female fights on his cards.

Quintana vs. Amador

Quintana and Amador clashed a year ago in Ontario, California. It was a ferocious fight with Amador winning by decision in a razor close bout. Both feel they know enough about each other to emerge victorious.

“We have been training very hard for this and we are ready,” said Quintana, 23, whose last fight was against Amador in April 2012. “She’s aggressive and keeps coming forward, so we worked a lot on our counter-punching and moving at distance.”

Amador’s last fight resulted in a loss to another San Diego fighter. Though she defeated Quintana the last time, she knows it won’t be easy. It wasn’t easy the first time either.

“I feel better than ever I worked really hard and I’m ready,” said Amador, who lost to Jolene Blackshear in her last fight in July. “I’ve been boxing for years.”

Those fight fans that witnessed their first confrontation realize this rematch will definitely surpass it in terms of excitement. Whenever a world title is at stake, the quality level of fighting increases.

Another Riverside area fighter on the card will be Hector “Teco” Serrano, meeting Rogelio Castaneda in a junior welterweight clash.

Serrano was discovered on a fight card by the late trainer Steward, who was planning to sign the Riverside prizefighter. Sadly, it never happened. Steward passed away suddenly and never did get to promote Serrano on one of his fight cards.

“He would have wanted to see a full slate of well-matched fights in the venue he called his home,” said David Arroyo, a friend of the great trainer and co-promoter of this event.
