FOR MANNY: Andy Lee Wins WBO 160 Crown Over Matt Korobov, TKO6
Andy Lee took on Matt Korobov in the second TV fight on HBO, on Saturday night, from the Cosmo in Las Vegas, and changed the game in the sixth, with a right hook. He flurried, like a orphan dog coming across a steak in the street, and forced the ref to pull the plug on a man who wasn’t defending himself.
The end came at 1;10 of the sixth, via TKO, the man who said he’d do it for ex trainer Manny Steward. He didn’t lie, did he? Lee, who tanked Manny, and trainers Sugar Hill and Joey Gamache after, landed 48 to 55 for the loser.
The vacant WBO crown was up for grabs. Manny told Lee he’d win a world crown, and he didn’t fib.
Lee, at 159 3/4, was 33-2 entering, with 23 Kos, hailed from Limerick, Ireland. Koro was 159 1/2 pounds, entered at 24-0 with 13 Kos, and came from Russia.
In the first, we heard Roy Jones say that Lee would be in a for a tough night. It was a slow round, as both landed fewer than ten blows.
In the second, in the battle of lefties, Koro snapped a jab, while Lee looked to land a sneaky hard counter. In the third, Lee rocked Koro. A right hook did the damage. Lee landed 9 to five for the Russian-born hitter. Lee didn’t exactly jump on the unbeaten but less experienced man, though.
In the fourth, Koro won the round, being busier, while Lee wanted to land a game-changer launch.
In the fifth, Lee landed some jabs. So did Koro, who we heard had 300 plus amateur wins. Lee landed just 8 to 17 for Koro. In the sixth, a right hook hurt Koro. Lee, hungry, angry, flurried and achieved a stoppage.
Lee was down on all three cards…
After, I spoke to promoter DiBella. “What a punch,” said Combustible Lou, who was Grinning Lou, as I could hear his smile through the phone. “Andy is so exciting, so promotable, one of the most exciting fighters in the game, such a good guy, I’m so happy for him.”
DiBella gave credit to Booth, for gameplanning and said he is pretty sure Steward is in a happy place. “That was a right hook from heaven!” he said, in closing.
