Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Steps In Another PIle of Mess, Can’t Make Weight For Texas Fight

What do you call a theme park ride when it’s like a rollercoaster, but there really aren’t any ascents built into the ride…just dips?

That’s the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. career right now, it feels like; the latest indignity, a minor one if not for his history, saw Junior unable to make weight for his Saturday night clash against Marco Reyes, which will run on Showtime.

Junior (48-2-1-1), the son of the MexiLegend, has managed to carve out a better career for himself than many figured he would say, six, seven years ago. He got himself into some decent scraps and was on a track to clean up, against, maybe, Gennady Golovkin. A deal to do that was on the table, but he changed course, and turned it down…and then worked to extricate himself from a deal with Top Rank. He hooked on with uber advisor Al Haymon but that tenure has been bumpy. He lost his last outing, to the tough but not phenomenal Andrzej Fonfara, and then drew scorn with a boatload of excuses and gibberish talk post-fight. But it looked like the JuniorCoaster would be on the upswing, as he went from trainer Joe Gosssen to Robert Garcia, and said all the right things. Ah, but he has a knack for saying all the right things, after being busted for diuretic use, after being nabbed for a DUI, for a cannabis positive…

The talk is now seen as just that, though, as he weighed 170.8 for a bout to take place in Texas, which was contracted for 170 pounds. Yep, he wouldn’t/couldn’t even agree to the super middleweight top of 168…and even then, that wasn’t enough of a concession to…whatever the heck it is which is holding the kid back.

There is a fascination with him and his missteps, the sort of which offspring of legends are not unfamiliar with. Fight fans are gleeful in their scorn of the kid, and by this time, it’s almost understandable, because yes, he disses the game, and the structures which are in place to keep playing fields level. The kid, he’s 29, though, isn’t a kid, and these aren’t youthful indiscretions. There seems to be a pschological block, an urge, almost, to step in excrement. He’s the booze swilling, pot puffing, weight missing, diuretic taking dude who seems in la-la land, telling the world he thinks he won a fight which even CJ Ross would have known better….

It was thought maybe fatherhood would help him get his vocational head on straight, but with this latest screwup…He leaves you shaking your head, and wondering if some of this push and monies and attention should be pointed to another fighter, someone who takes this thing of ours properly seriously, not someone who gets chance after chance because of who his dad was. Boiled down, there are now that many more Marcos Reyes fans than there were yesterday; the Mexican was 168.4 at the Friday weigh in.

The Showtime show which is topped by their fight starts at 10 PM tomorrow night. I expect the rating to be decent, because many will be tuning in to see if the JuniorCoaster goes right off the tracks, once and for all.
