L.A: Fight Club Results – Golden Boy At The Belasco Jan 29

Fight Club Results – Golden Boy Promotions kicks of the 2016 schedule with their L.A. Fight Club series at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, California. The event is being reported as a sell-out for GBP.
The opening fight of the night sees young Super Bantamweight Pablo Rubio (3-0) taking on Bryan Perez Nevarez (2-2-1). Rubio had a noticeable height advantage. The first round saw the two fighters testing each other, and the second round saw both fighters come out throwing bombs. Rubio overwhelmed Perez, hurting him early and trapping him against the ropes. Rubio, called “The Shark,” used a blistering uppercut to cause Perez to look for the clinches. Rubio threw punches until Perez took a knee. Perez stayed down for the count, ending the fight.
The second fight sees Joshua “The Professor” Franco (3-0) taking on Juan Carlos Benavides (5-6-1). Franco, out of San Antonio, is a 20 year old prospect who has been fighting trial horses the last two times out. This is more of the same. Franco worked to establish himself in the first round, moving forward against Benavides, who was quirky and unorthodox. Benavides also had height and reach advantages, but Franco really turned it on in the second half of the second round, landing to the body with consistency. Franco is clearly the better, more technical fighter, but Benavides was game and would not go away. In the end, Franco logged the full six, logging quality rounds and scoring the comfortable win. The judges saw the fight for Franco via unanimous decision, with cards of 60-54 across the board.
The third fight of the evening saw 6 rounds at Featherweight as Edgar Valerio was took on Justin Lopez. Valerio was nine years younger and had big height and reach advantages. Valerio trapped Lopez along the ropes and sent him to the canvas with hard punches. Lopez got up, but the referee stepped in during the next flurry, as a left uppercut took the starch out of Lopez. The stop was in the first round at the 2:41 mark. Valerio was impressive.
The broadcast team was briefly joined by the winners of all three preliminary bouts to review the replays. This was a nice touch by GBP, as the crew worked to get the young men accustomed to the spotlight and comfortable on camera.
The broadcast opener starts with Abraham Lopez vs Carlos Valcarcel. The fight was a 10 round Featherweight encounter, with the undefeated Lopez (19-0-1) coming in as the big favorite. Valcarcel represented Puerto Rico in the Olympics on 2004, but he spent three years away from competition. Valcarcel was very game, but Lopez started piling up the rounds, landing huge body shots throughout. Valcarcel did not answer the bell for the 8th round, preferring to stay on his stool as the constant attack took its toll.
With the opening fight going long, the main event is next, leaving the Johnathan Navarro vs Carlos Rodriguez 6 rounder for the end of the night.
Julian ” El Camaron” Ramirez (15-0) was taking on veteran Christopher Martin (28-6-3). Ramirez was slightly ill heading into the fight and surprisingly, the 22 year old failed to make the weight. Ramirez came out very strong however, and for the first few rounds it appeared as if Ramirez was going to get Martin out of there. Martin, however, hung around and in the sixth he landed a body shot that appeared to slow down Ramirez. The rest of the fight saw Martin keep it competitve. In the end the judges gave Ramirez a comfortable unanimous decison by scores of 100-90 and 99-91 twice
In the walkout bout, Johnathan Navarro took out Carlos Rodriguez 49 seconds into the second round with a body shot. Rodriguez was game but outclassed.
