Amanda Serrano Seeks WBO Featherweight World Title in NYC Tonite

Amanda Serrano Seeks WBO Featherweight World Title – Last night in New York City, Amanda Serrano (26-1-1) and Olivia Gerula (17-15-2) both made weight, making their 126 lb bout for the WBO´s vacant World Female Featherweight championship official. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds of 2 minutes and it is the headline attraction of DiBella Entertainment´s eight fight boxing card at BB King´s Bar and Grill in New York City.

Serrano tipped the scales right at the 126 lb limit, while Gerula came in lighter, at 123.5 lbs.

Serrano was originally scheduled to fight Helen Joseph of Ghana on January 16^th for the vacant belt, but Joseph never boarded her flight.  Serrano did go through the process of making the weight in January, only to see her fight cancelled.

As for Gerula, she is a veteran from Canada who is 36 years old and she has been fighting professionally since her teens. She is already 1-0 in 2016, having won a 6 round bout on January 21^st, and she has won four of her last five. The level of competition she has faced is very high, as she has gone 1-2 in a trilogy of fights with Jelena Mrdjenovich and she has a 2003 draw with Mia St John, to name just two of the quality opponents spread throughout her resume.  Now, she adds Serrano to her list.

Promoter Lou DiBella promised after the cancellation of January’s bout that Serrano would get her title shot quickly and he came through.  DiBella has been running his “Broadway Boxing” series for many years at BB King’s.

Serrano, who lives in Brooklyn, has held the WBO World Female Lightweight title and the IBF World Female Super Featherweight title at different points in her career. Serrano, 27 years old, was born in Puerto Rico and her older sister Cindy is an active boxer as well.  Though this fight is not at the Barclays Center and potentially on Showtime like the cancelled January fight, a win will see Serrano further establish herself as one of the faces of women’s boxing.

The co-feature, a 10-round contest in the Middleweight division, features veterans Avtandil Khurtsidze (31-2-2) and Giovanni Lorenzo (34-7).  At Super Middleweight, Lennox Allen (20-0-1) faces Martin Verdin (21-19-2) in an eight round bout, and there are five additional bouts slated for 6 rounds.
