Adrien Broner Fights Ashley Theophane On April Fool’s
Adrien Broner Fights Ashley Theophane – WBA World Super Lightweight champion Adrien Broner returns to the ring on April 1st to make the first defense of his newly captured belt as he faces Ashley Theophane. The fight will air on Spike TV as part of the Premier Boxing Champions series.
Right now, few are giving the veteran Theophane much of a chance. The sport books have Broner at -4500, with Theophane paying back at +1500.
Theophane has a record of 39-6-1, and this will be the first chance at a world title for the 35 year old who was born in London. He fought most of his career in England, where he has held the British Super Lightweight title. His last loss came on September 14th, 2013 when he lost to Argentina’s Pablo Cesar Cano via a Split Decision. In late 2013, Theophane re-located to Las Vegas where he was accepted into Floyd Mayweather Jr’s “Money Team”, and he has gone 6-0 since.
We last saw Broner in October, when he stopped Khabib Allkhverdiev in round twelve of their fight at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati to capture the Vacant WBA belt. Since then Broner has engaged in as war of words with former friend and mentor Floyd Mayweather Jr that seems to have left their relationship frayed. There was even talk of a match between the two, though it never got beyond the “trash talk” stages.
Adrien Broner Fights Ashley Theophane On April Fool’s
Perhaps Theophane is being sent in to do some of the boss’ dirty work? Though the match has only been official for a few weeks, Theophane had been told by TMT he would be fighting Broner at least as far back as October.
Money Team trainers Nate Ford and Jeff Mason were talking about preparing Theophane for a Broner fight at the October 16th Andrjez Fonfara vs Nathan Cleverly bout in Chicago.
At 35 years old, Theophane has been training for this fight for a long-time. Theophane has been taking to social media with videos of his work in the gym, and while Broner has been lighting up social media, Theophane has been quietly putting in the work.
Theophane has one card to play. He must be the crafty veteran who works hard and catches Broner taking him lightly. Broner has gotten by on natural talent and on the “hype” generated by his reputation as a Mayweather protégé. For what it is worth, Theophane has the support of Mayweather, and that means that Broner may not be able to count on that support going forward. If that is not enough to shake Broner into being focused for this fight more than for any fight before, he may be in for a tougher time in this fight than he expects.
Come the first of April, Theophane will look to prove that a “fool” and his belt are soon separated.
