Guillermo Rigondeaux Says “It Is Time To Take Him To A Dark Place”

The British boxing public eagerly awaits their first glimpse of all-world super bantamweight Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba this Saturday night in Cardiff, Wales. The “Jackal” as he is known, is in England to defend his WBA “Super World” title at 122 pounds against James Dickens. The weigh-ins are in the books from Friday afternoon, and the 122 pound world title fight is official as both men came in under the weight class limit.

“I came with all the respect in the world, and that won’t change. But now, I have to take him to deep waters and watch him turn purple. It is my only option” said the always confident Cuban phenom on his Facebook account shortly after stepping off the scales.

As good as Rigondeaux is, he is now 35 years old and he has seemed to burn a few bridges with lackluster performances against average opponents. He did not help his cause by being defiant in the face of criticism, firm in his belief that technical prowess trumps all other factors, including being a crowd pleaser. Well with offers in the United States drying up, Rigondeaux headed to Japan to stay busy, and as a result few saw his 11 round war against Hisashi Amagasa in Tokyo. That fight led to a November of 2015 gig against Filipino Drian Francisco back in the United States, and he once again put on a flat performance. Despite his expressed desire to stay busy, this fight comes after an eight month layoff as Rigondeaux struggled to get fights.

No one expects Rigondeaux to lose, as the sports books have installed him a strong -4000 favorite, with Dickens returning at +2000. Dickens is 22-1 overall, and at 25 years old he is a decade younger than Rigo, but Rigo is looking at him as just a stepping stone to bigger fights. If he is a hit in England, a potential match with Scott Quigg could materialize, and then there is a potential The Jackal vs The Jackal match with Carl Frampton that would also be a huge draw.
