Best Wishes Sammy Vasquez For A Quick Recovery
Best Wishes Sammy Vasquez – When last we saw Sammy “The Who Can Mexican” Vasquez, it was this past weekend when the welterweight contender lost a hard fought unanimous decision to Felix Diaz to experience the first loss of his career. Diaz, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist from the Dominican Republic, edged Vasquez on the scorecards (95-94,96-93, 95-94) in a fight that saw both men still fighting hard in the final round.
Vasquez suffered several cuts, including a severe cut inside the mouth that affected his ability to keep the mouthpiece in during the fight, but he received more disturbing news while being examined by doctors after the fight. A tumor was found on one of his glands, that although benign, would require surgery.
In a video on his Facebook account, Vasquez was very matter of fact about the situation. He started off saying “it’s always something.” The video was shot while Vasquez was in the hospital awaiting the surgery which was scheduled for Wednesday evening.
Reports are that the surgery went well. Vasquez’s own latest update states “Thanks everyone for your prayers. Surgery went well and my levels are now normal. I always appreciate everyone’s support.”
Vasquez is 21-1 and he has already earned a reputation for his work ethic. Though coming off the first blemish on his record and now with this surgery, the 30 year old is expected back in the gym shortly. Vasquez has traditionally liked to stay active, fighting six times in 2014 and three times in 2015, so he will want to get back in the ring as soon as possible. No timetable on a return has yet been set.
The Boxing Channel sends it’s best wishes to Sammy Vasquez and his family as he recovers from yesterday’s surgery. See you back in the ring soon, “Sarge.”
