Quick Results From Quebec July 29 – Canada’s beautiful Centre Videotron in Quebec City hosted a full night of fights that saw the main events air on SPIKE TV as part of the Premier Boxing Champions series.

WBC world light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, from Montreal via Haiti, was enjoying the home cooking again as he risked his belt for the seventh time, this time facing once beaten Thomas Williams Jr (20-1) of Fort Washington, Maryland.

Thomas Williams Jr deserves a lot of credit for making the fight a gritty, entertaining affair while it lasted. Stevenson knocked him down in the opening round, but he came back to win the second round and had more good moments until Stevenson nailed him with a huge left uppercut late in Round 4. Williams landed face first on the canvas and was counted out.  Stevenson retains his WBC belt while improving his record to 28-1 (23 KOs).

In the co-feature, contested at the catch-weight of 182 pounds, light heavyweight Eleider Alvarez scored a unanimous 10-round decision over New Zealand’s Robert Berridge, a late replacement for Chad Dawson who was forced to pull out with a shoulder injury.

The undefeated Alvarez, working to keep his name on the list of potential opponents for Adonis Stevenson, has a methodical, no risk style that doesn’t make for entertaining fights. In Berridge he was facing an awkward southpaw, but more was expected of Alvarez who would win almost every round but never showed a sense of urgency and likely did nothing to improve his chances of landing a big money fight. The judges came back with scores of  98-92, 98-92 and 99-90.

In the televised swing bout, rising contenders Immanuel Aleem and Demond Nicholson clashed in an 8-round middleweight affair. Aleem, 16-0 going in, and Nicholson 17-1-1, knew each other well from their amateur days. What resulted was a strategic battle that the judges saw a majority draw.

In another bout of note, heavyweight Oscar Rivas improved to 20-0 (15) with a third round stoppage of Jeremiah Karpency who declined to 12-1-1. Rivas, like Eleider Alvarez, hails from Columbia but fights out of Montreal. Karpency, from Adah, Pennsylvania, is the younger brother of Tommy Karpency who opposed Oleksander Gvozdyk at the MGM Grand on July 23 and was stopped in the sixth round. It wasn’t a good week for the Karpency family.

The news coming out of Canada sees WBC light heavyweight titleholder Adonis Stevenson notch his 28th win and retain his belt for the seventh time.
