Demetrious Andrade Facing Jack Culcay in Germany?

Demetrious Andrade Facing Jack Culcay? – Former WBO world 154 pound champion Demetrious Andrade is said to be in the final stages of reaching an agreement to face WBA world titlist Jack Culcay. The plan is for the fight to take place on November 5th in Germany, which puts Andrade on the road as he looks to re-enter the title picture.
Andrade, the #4 ranked super welterweight in the world today according to the respected TBRB.org website, last fought in June of this year when he outfoxed and eventually stopped Willie Nelson in the 12th round of a fight that aired on Showtime in the United States. The win moved Andrade’s perfect record to 23-0, but that was just his second fight in the last 28 months. Andrade held the WBO’s world title after he put the first loss on rugged veteran Vanes Martirosyan’s record back in November of 2013, and he successfully defended the belt against Brian Rose before being stripped of the title due to inactivity. The former 2008 Olympian turned pro shortly after finishing 4th at the Beijing Games, but this will be his first professional fight outside of the United States.
Culcay is based out of Germany and he has fought his entire career in Europe. He won the WBA’s “interim” belt in May of 2015 when he won a unanimous decision over fellow countryman Maurice Weber. The WBA’s full-blown world titleholder is Erislandy Lara, so Culcay continues to fly under the radar internationally despite having made two successful defenses of the “interim” strap. Lara is now the honorary “Super World” champion and Culcay has been elevated to the “regular” world title. Culcay has an extensive amateur background as well, and that includes a loss to Andrade in the 2007 amateur world championships at 147 pounds.
The fight is meaningful as it would give Andrade a second world title in what is a crowded weight class in the United States. It should be remembered that Culcay holds the belt and is fighting at home, but he deserves credit for bringing in an international opponent for his next test. As stated, the basic agreement is in place with the final contract formalities still being ironed out. Hopefully the fight is finalized soon with the November 5th date now just four weeks away.
