Daniel Franco Update: Fundraising Event Sat. in Ontario, Calif.

Great strides have been made by injured boxer Daniel Franco and he remains in rehabilitation within his home area of Southern California.

Costs are running like an open faucet.

Friends from the boxing community organized a fundraising event for Saturday July 29, at the Last Round Bar and Grill in Ontario, California. Specials guests will include numerous boxing stars, a raffle, boxing merchandise and a free viewing of the Mikey Garcia vs. Adrien Broner fight on television.

The event begins at 4 p.m. and there is free admission at the eatery located at 1542 W. Holt Blvd. in Ontario.

Franco, 25, was battling Utah’s Jose Haro for the NABF featherweight title in Sloan, Iowa on June 10, when he suffered a knockout loss. He was immediately taken to the closest trauma hospital after complaining of pain in his head. He was diagnosed with a “brain bleed” and subsequently was operated on more than once to alleviate the pressure in his head.

The brain operation was successful and Franco was finally allowed to return to California last week after spending weeks in Iowa, then Nebraska. Now Franco is convalescing in Pomona which is minutes from his actual home in Rancho Cucamonga.

“He doesn’t know anything about the fight. He doesn’t remember any of that. He does know the results,” said Al Franco, the father who is currently with his amateur team in Kansas City, Mo. for a national tournament. “Daniel just remembers waking up in the hospital but that’s it.”

Al Franco also stated that his son is taking medication to prevent seizures. It’s another side effect from the brain bleed that forced movement could still cause complications. The medication is to prevent seizures that could result in further injury such as falling down.

“He is actually doing pretty good,” said Al Franco.

But hospital costs for his procedure and rehabilitation are enormous and despite insurance there are still mounting costs that include medical bills not covered and transportation, food, and loss of revenue by the Franco family.

Nancy Rodriguez, the organizer of the event, said she saw a need for the boxing community to rally around Franco who nearly lost his life for the sport.
