Broner vs Garcia Results and More From Brooklyn

Broner vs Garcia Results and More From Brooklyn – Brooklyn’s Barclays Center shined bright as the venue for Saturday night’s major Showtime Boxing card.
The main event saw former four-division world titlist Adrien Broner facing off against former lightweight world champion Mikey Garcia at 140 pounds. Garcia came out and set the pace from early on and he had Broner fighting off the back foot throughout the fight. Broner failed to show a second gear or simple urgency as he lost round after round to the mistake-free Garcia. In the end the judges had the fight for Garcia by scores of 117-111,116-112,116-112. Many ringsiders thought the fight was more lopsided. ESPN’s Dan Rafael awarded Garcia all 12 rounds.
Former IBF 154-pound world champion Jermall Charlo took on veteran Jorge Sebastian Heiland at middleweight. Charlo did not seem to lose anything with the move in weight as he efficiently got the job done against an opponent who was hobbled by a leg injury from early on. Charlo stopped Heiland in the fourth round after Heiland hit the canvas and the referee stepped in as the Argentinian was getting up. Prior to the fight the NY commission forced Heiland to remove a knee wrap and there is talk that Heiland may have entered the fight with a pre-existing injury.
In highly anticipated heavyweight action, undefeated Jarrell Miller faced off against former WBC title contender Gerald Washington. Washington came out with a strong first round but “Big Baby” never stopped coming forward. Miller used a good body attack and a high punch volume to wear out Washington, who would not answer the bell for round 9.
In earlier fights of note, Rau’shee Warren won a unanimous decision over McJoe Arroyo in a 12-round junior bantamweight contest and Katie Taylor TKOed Jasmine Clarkson in a lightweight contest slated for eight two-minute rounds.
The Warren-Arroyo fight was billed as an IBF title eliminator with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger for reigning titlist Jerwin Ancajas. A three-time Olympian, Warren (15-2) got the nod by scores of 118-110 and 117-111 twice. It was the second straight loss for Arroyo who slumped to 17-2
Taylor, a multi-decorated amateur who has been called the most outstanding Irish sportsperson of her generation, had little difficulty with Clarkson, a late sub from Cedar Hill, Texas. After three rounds, it was determined that no purpose was served by allowing Clarkson to take further punishment. It was the U.S. debut for Taylor who improved to 6-0 (4).
