RINGSIDE REPORT BY SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT TARRAH ZAEL –A crowd filled the room to support local prospects in what would be a long night of Bash Boxing promotions on Saturday night at the Florentine Gardens on Hollywood Boulevard.

The fight card was a long list of upcoming talent in the area and showcased boxers in almost every weight class. Each bout had the crowd engaged in the action as the night held various mini-entertainment shows between bouts.

After a long wait of preliminary bouts, the crowd was pleased to witness the main event of the night, a scheduled six-round welterweight clash. But 2016 Olympic silver medalist Shakhram Giyasov of Uzbekistan (3-0, 2 KOs) finished the night early with a right hand to the body of his opponent, Daniel Echeverria (19-6, 17 KOs), who took a knee in pain from the blow. The knockout was early at 1:50 into the first round.

The co-main event saw local favorite Jessy Martinez (10-0) of Woodland Hills, CA continue his undefeated record by stoppage against Yunier Calzada (6-4) of Cuba in a scheduled six-round super welterweight clash. Both brawlers fought toe-to-toe as the crowd stayed engaged until the hometown local, Martinez, overpowered the Cuban with his longer arm reach. Martinez won by technical knockout in the fourth round.

In what could easily be called the fight of the night, Murodjon Akhmadeliev (3-0, 2 KOs) of Uzbekistan dominated Luis Fernando Molina (7-5-1, 2 KOs) of Argentina to in the process of winning a unanimous decision. From the first round, Akhmadeliev delivered wide punches and switched stances multiple times all while keeping his hands low.  His counterpart, Molina, could not find an opportunity to counter any punches on the confident showboating contender. After six-rounds in the super lightweight bout, all three judges scored the fight at 59-53 for Akhmadeliev.

In a super lightweight battle, Ashkat Ualikhanov (3-1) of Kazakhstan followed his opponent Darel Harris (1-3-1) around the ring, finding multiple opportunities to land his powerful hooks and uppercuts to the chin. After four rounds, all three judges scored the bout 40-35, a win by unanimous decision for the Kazakhstani pugilist.

In the first six-round bout of the night, welterweight Damien Lopez (6-0-1, 4 KOs) of Burbank, CA stopped Isaac Freeman at 2:53 of the fourth round at 2:53. Lopez rocked Freeman (3-8-1, 3 KOs) of Los Angeles with powerful left hooks and overhand rights. Lopez dominated every round up until the knockout by keeping Freeman on the ropes and using his distance to deliver punches.

Other Bouts

The opening bout of the night saw Salvador Perez (4-0-1) of Oxnard, CA up against Kevin Shacks (2-2-3) of Michigan in a four-round welterweight battle. Shacks stumbled multiple times as Perez connected big shots upon his chin, dominating the fight. Shacks eventually found his way to land uppercuts and his overhand rights upon Perez. But, it was the hometown local, Perez who was the technically better fighter of the two and after all four rounds were complete, the judges scored the fight: 39-27 Perez and 38-38 two times for a majority draw.

In a super lightweight bout scheduled for four rounds, Alexey Mazur (2-0) of Russia captured a unanimous decision over Markus Jones of Los Angeles. Mazur stayed calm throughout the fight and focused on his game plan. All three judges scored the bout 40-36 for the Russian.

Stephen Pichardo (4-1) of Los Angeles won a majority decision over Evan Torres (7-6) in a four-round middleweight bout. Although, Torres dominated the majority of the fight with his wide but connecting punches, surprisingly the decision went the other way.

The fourth bout of the night produced an early stoppage as Israel Mercado (4-0) of Pomona, CA scored a knockout win over Daniel Bastien (4-10, 1-5 KO) at 2:34 in the first round. Mercardo threw hard and wide punches over his Mexican opponent and the fight was stopped as Bastien was not doing enough to please the referee.

Southpaw Rudy Garcia of South Central Los Angeles (8-0, 1 KO) survived a head butt gash over the top of his left eye from Edward Ceballos (7-3-1). Ceballos caught Garcia a couple of times when he countered any big shots, but Garcia continued to dominate the super bantamweight bout. The last two rounds of the six-round bout were very close with both fighters going toe to toe. The judges scored the bout 60-54, all for Garcia.
