NEWS FLASH: A Covid-19 Outbreak Threatens to Derail Fury – Wilder III

In a story first reported by Mike Coppinger of The Athletic, the trilogy fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, slated for July 24, will likely be pushed back into September because of an outbreak of the coronavirus in Fury’s training camp. Coppinger did not disclose the names of the affected individuals; health privacy laws are a roadblock to obtaining and sharing this information.
Co-promoter Bob Arum is undoubtedly livid.
In a conversation with boxing writer Wil Esco, published on June 16, Arum took the opportunity to upbraid IBF/WBO/WBA world lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez who contracted the coronavirus and was forced to re-schedule his match with IBF mandatory challenger George Kambosos Jr. “…with the vaccination (available) anybody who gets Covid shame on them,” said Arum. “Shame on them because they haven’t taken the time or they haven’t, for some crazy reason, not to get vaccinated. That’s nuts.” In the same interview, Arum asserted that Fury and Wilder were fully vaccinated, as were their corners.
Tyson Fury has been training in Las Vegas. In recent days, Clark County, home to Las Vegas, has seen an uptick in new Covid-19 cases. There’s no indication, however, of a rollback in Covid-restrictions. As it now stands, arenas and concert halls in Nevada are permitted to operate at full capacity.
This is a developing story. Check back for new developments.
