Omar Trinidad Defeats Adan Ochoa in Battle of L.A.

A crosstown battle between Los Angeles featherweights saw Omar Cande Trinidad finish strong in defeating Adan Ochoa by unanimous decision after eight rugged back and forth rounds on Friday.
East L.A.’s Trinidad (12-0-1, 9 KOs) was eager to knock out Compton’s Ochoa (12-3, 5 KOs) but had to settle for the decision win before a boisterous crowd at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, CA.
This fight was made because Ochoa and Trinidad did not like each other and they settled their differences in the prize ring. They also provided the fans with one of the more entertaining fights this year.
“It takes two to tango,” said Trinidad.
Ochoa took the lead in the opening two rounds with combination punching and multiple jabs. Trinidad held back and seemed to study what his foe was offering.
Around the fourth round, Trinidad opened up with heavy punches and though he connected several times with rocket rights and perfect left hooks, Ochoa took them and countered with his own blows.
The two featherweights went back and forth with neither willing to surrender. Trinidad’s big blows convinced the judges he was the winner and scored the fight 80-72 twice and 78-74. No round was dominated by one or the other fighter.
“He had heart,” said Trinidad. “I love strong action fights.”
Promoter Tom Loeffler said Trinidad will be back in July.
Other Bouts
Gabe Silva (1-0) won his pro debut by decision after four rounds versus Angelo Thompson (0-7) in a middleweight bout. Silva is the son of MMA great Anderson “Spider” Silva and lives in Los Angeles. It was his first foray into pro boxing. And, it was also his dad’s birthday present.
“I’m happy for him,” said Anderson Silva about his son’s first pro boxing win.
Sacramento’s Cain Sandoval (9-0, 9 KOs) dominated veteran Jose Angulo (14-6) with a steady supply of rights and two knockdowns to remain undefeated. Ecuador’s Angulo tried to put up resistance but Sandoval floored him with a six-punch volley in the second round. The fight continued for another three rounds until another ferocious barrage of blows forced referee Jack Reiss to halt the match at 2:34 of the fifth round.
Welterweights Osvaldo Lopez (4-0-1) and Jose Manuel Gomez (4-2-1) fought to a split draw after six rounds. Lopez started quickly with a busier attack but Gomez took over the fight once they fought inside where Lopez was forced to hold for lack of inside fighting skills.
Umar Dzambekov (4-0, 3 KOs) bludgeoned Nathan Sharp (4-5) for three rounds until referee Ed Hernandez stopped the fight at 2:24 of a light heavyweight contest. Dzambekov fights out of Los Angeles.
In a female flyweight fight, Gloria Munguilla (3-0) edged past Nikki Williams (0-1) by decision who was making her pro debut.
In a super welterweight match, Monray Marable (1-0) scored a knockout win over Steve von Euw (2-1) in the first round.
