PBC on ESPN July 9 – The Premier Boxing Champions were at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, New Jersey with a seven fight boxing card that saw the main events airing on ESPN. In the main event spotlight is 130 pound prospect Mario Barrios (15-0) as he faces Italy’s experienced Devis Boschiero (39-4-1).

The co-main event saw undefeated Eddie Ramirez (13-0) taking on Jessie Roman (20-2) in a ten round welterweight bout. Roman was coming off a layoff of nearly a year, and he accepted the fight with less than two weeks notice.

The match started off with Ramirez setting the pace throughout the first few rounds. Ramirez established a busy jab, while Roman was trying to land a big counterpunch. Despite the short notice taking the fight by Roman, he had a game plan and he appeared to be keeping it competitive. In round three, Ramirez put together the best rally of the fight, appearing to hurt Roman against the ropes. Roman forced back with an uppercut that stopped the momentum by Ramirez.

By round four, the busy work by Ramirez that included solid body work was starting to pay off as Roman was beginning to slow down and take more punches. The last minute of round five saw Ramirez catch Roman against the ropes with a series of bludgeoning shots. Roman answered but backed off as Ramirez pursued him to end the round. Halfway thru the fight, Ramirez had likely won every round.

Round six and seven saw Ramirez take his foot off the gas, however he came out with renewed aggression to start round eight.  Heading into the final two rounds of the fight, Roman’s corner was telling him he was losing the fight. Unfortunately for Roman, round nine saw fatigue catch up to him and he did little but take punches. Ramirez cruised in the tenth round as he was comfortably ahead and Roman did not have enough left in the tank to change the fight as time ran out.

In the end, the judges gave the fight to Ramirez by scores of 98-92 and 99-91 twice.

The main event between Barrios and Boschiero was scheduled for twelve rounds.

Barrios was clearly the longer and taller fighter, and his youth advantage had him as a big favorite heading in. Boschiero was able to use his short stature to make Barrios look bad, as the young prospect had trouble adjusting to the small target.

But Boschiero did not generate much offense, at times seeming to spend entire rounds without throwing punches. Inevitably, the rounds were piling up for Barrios, who scored a knockdown in the last round to close out the fight strong.

The final scores were identical, 120-107 from all three judges, as Barrios runs his record to 16-0.
