Boxing News: DiBella Signs Fres Oquendo
NEW YORK (May 26, 2005) – DiBella Entertainment has signed heavyweight contender Fres Oquendo to an exclusive promotional agreement, it was announced today by DBE President Lou DiBella.
Oquendo is rated #9 in The Ring heavyweight rankings. A Chicago native of Puerto Rican heritage, he boasts a 24-3 career mark, including 15 victories by way of kayo. The “Big O” won his first 22 career fights, turning back the likes of David Izon (a third round TKO at the Javits Center which vaulted Fres to contender status) as well as scores over Obed Sullivan, Maurice Harris and Cliff Etienne.
His only setbacks came at the hands of leading heavyweights David Tua, Chris Byrd and John Ruiz. The Byrd loss was a controversial, disputed 12-round decision in an IBF world heavyweight championship fight on September 20, 2003 at Mohegan Sun.
“Fres is one of the most talented heavyweights in the world, and is ready to make another run at the world heavyweight championship,” said DiBella. “He is one of the top Latino fighters of his generation, and worthy of another chance at the heavyweight title.”
