James Toney Vs. Sam Peter Sept. 2 In La
Lights Out meets The Nigerian Nightmare in Los Angeles
On Saturday, Sept. 2, broadcast live on Showtime from the Staples Center in LA, James “Light Out” Toney (69-4-2, 43 KOs) meets Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter (26-1, 22 KOs) in a not-to-be missed heavyweight battle.
The 12-round eliminator is for the WBC’s number one spot.
Toney, born in Grand Rapids but now making his home in LA, was champion at middleweight, super middleweight and cruiserweight (and heavyweight, for a day, before he was stripped of his title because of steroids). A throwback, old school, a four star ring general fighting among the troops, Toney’s forgotten more about boxing than most of us will ever know.
Toney is presently ranked No. 2 in the WBC. If he takes care of Sam Peter, he gets another shot at the crown.
Peter, originally from Akwaibom, Nigeria, but now calling Las Vegas home, is ranked No. 3 by the WBC. Maybe the hardest hitter, the purest puncher in the heavyweight ranks, Peter’s loss to Wladimir Klitschko took some of the gloss off the man once touted as the future of the division.
Still, Peter is hungry and young, whereas Toney is not hungry and not young, but the fight has master versus novice written all over it.
James Toney/Sam Peter is co-promoted by Goossen Tutor and Duva Boxing.
It should go to the scorecards.
