Rodriguez stops Morelo at the Fourth and B

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Juan Carlos “Camello” Rodriguez may have a lot of losses on his record but judging by tonight’s performance, records don’t always tell the whole story. Rodriguez, the Mexican national champion at 140 lbs., demolished the very game William Morelo of Monteria, Colombia in a well fought performance where he showed poise under fire at the Fourth and B in downtown San Diego.

Rodriguez, from Guadalajara Mexico, boxed well for the first round with both men being tentative as they got comfortable in the ring. Rodriguez landed a few short uppercuts that we’d see repeatedly throughout the night. Rodriguez was more active in the second and third as he fought effectively from the outside and managed to land several more uppercuts that won him the third stanza. Morelo was landing some nice straight rights that marked up Rodriguez’s face. Very nice exchanges in the fourth as Rodriguez fought from the middle distance using short punches, jabs and uppercuts to score on many occasions. Morelo countered back with some left and right crosses. The fifth was all Rodriguez as he landed several combinations including a short uppercut that put Morelo on the canvas. Morelo got up but referee Jose Cobian wisely called a halt to the action at 1:59 of the fifth round. With the win, Rodriguez, of Guadalajara, Mexico wins the vacant WBC Latin Jr. Welterweight title and improves to 53-20-3, 37 KO’s. Morelo drops to 23-6, 17 KO’s. “I know I have a lot of losses on my record but if you examine it you’ll see I’ve fought some of the best and many times on short notice,” Rodriguez said after his hard-fought win. “I was in great shape tonight and I used my experience to my advantage.”

Espinoza brutalizes Sanchez in one
Super Flyweight Sergio “The San Diego Sensation” Espinoza lived up to his nickname as he blasted Marco Antonio Sanchez in the first round with a brutal right uppercut that left Sanchez on the canvas in bad condition. Sanchez was counted out by referee David Mendoza at 2:44 of the first. Espinoza improves to 13-2, 5 KO’s. Sanchez drops to 5-2, 4 KO’s.

Arteaga stops Garcia in brawl
A street fight broke out between Irvin Garcia of Lemoore, California and Alejandro Arteaga of Bakersfield as both men came out throwing punches with bad intentions. Arteaga dominated most of the first round with Garcia taking the last minute as he landed a hard left that shook Arteaga. Arteaga came out aggressive in the second as Garcia boxed and countered. Arteaga was landing good shots when Garcia surprised him with a hard right that staggered Arteaga and had him in serious trouble. Arateaga was almost out on his feet and came close to hitting the canvas. He showed a lot of heart and barely survived Garcia’s onslaught. The third came and a now recovered Arteaga was once again the aggressor as he fired off several shots that caught Garcia and had him on the ropes retreating in serious trouble. A barrage of uncontested punches prompted a stoppage by referee David Mendoza. Arteaga stopped Garcia at 2:44 of the third round.

Martin dominates Yoeneke
Bantamweight Christopher Martin of Chula Vista took on Brice Yoeneke in a four round scheduled bout. Martin came out pumping a hard jab that landed effectively on Yoeneke who was game but out-sped by Martin who snuck a hard left hook that shook Yoeneke’s dreadlocks. Martin dominated the second with some nice jab, jab, right hook combos that landed on numerous occasions. Yoeneke was trying to get inside Martin’s guard without luck. He paid a price as a hard right by Martin shook him again. Yoeneke was letting it all hang out in the third as he threw several combinations that landed on the arms of Martin. Martin pursued until the very end of the round which he punctuated by landing some hard rights that were slowly crushing Yoeneke’s resolve. The fourth was all Martin as he punished the African living and fighting in Las Vegas. The decision was announced as 40-36 all across the board for Martin. Martin’s record improves to 4-0-1. Yoeneke falls to 0-2.

Batey outboxes Hall, gets draw
Female Superflyweight Carly Batey, of San Diego, took on Oceanside’s Lenny Hall in a scheduled four-rounder. A good first round as both women mixed it up with Batey landing the more meaningful shots. Hall landed a couple of hard straights but was outlanded by Batey. Batey bounced around nicely in the second as she countered effectively and landed some nice body shots. Hall pursued but was getting outboxed. Batey used her speed and foot work in the third to her advantage a she slipped in and out of range. Batey caught Hall with some hard lefts that clearly bothered her but never had her in any sort of danger. The fourth round was Hall’s as she finally landed some nice straights. Hall took the round. My unofficial score owas 3 rounds to 1 for Batey. The judges disagreed with me and scored the bout 38-38, 39-37 and 38-38. A majority draw. Batey is now 1-1-1 while Hall is 0-0-1 after her pro debut.

The bouts were televised on Telemundo and promoted by Tuto Zabala’s All-Star Boxing.
