UPDATE: Mayweather Arrested, Booked, Released; Faces Larceny Charge
There should not be any rush to judgment, because details are still scarce, but authorities say Floyd Mayweather Jr. is being sought for questioning in Las Vegas, after a former girlfriend alleged that the boxer committed an act of domestic violence against her.
The LA Times reports that early Thursday morning, Josie Harris, who has three children with Mayweather, called the cops to her Las Vegas home. She was brought to a hospital, and treated for minor injuries, and released.
At this point, Mr. Mayweather is a suspect in a domestic battery violence case, and we would very much like to speak with him, a police spokesman said, according to the Times.
Mayweather is merely seen as a person of interest, at this point.
The incident is all the more striking, considering that Floyds uncle Roger is about to stand trial for assaulting a woman, a female fighter. It comes on the heels of his Ustream takedown on Manny Pacquiao, in which he used hateful language, which he apologized for.
Readers should know that Harris accused Mayweather of kicking her, punching her and pulling her hair in 2003, when they were sitting in a car outside a Vegas club. He was charged with felony battery, and was facing prison time as he went through a jury trial. A jury acquitted Mayweather in July 2005, after Harris said she wasnt being truthful in her account of the incident, saying she was mad at Mayweather for hooking up with another woman. Mayweather pleaded guilty to two domestic violence counts in March 2002; those situations involved Melissa Brim, the mother of his oldest kid, and took place in 2001, the Grand Rapid Press reported. The incidents occured less than a month after Mayweather beat Diego Corrales, who was then facing spousal abuse charges, and Mayweather promised to defeat his foe on behalf of battered women. Then, he received a one-year suspended sentence for punching females Herneatha McGill and Kaara Blackburn at a club in the Luxor hotel in August 2003.
TMZ reports that Mayweathers pal 50 Cent Fiddy doubts Harris current allegation, and that he Tweeted, Another case of angry baby mama wanting money. Police are looking for [Mayweather]. I just got off the phone with him. Shes claiming he hit her but has no bruises. Floyd went to see his kids last night if a fighter of floyd caliber hits u, u would b bruised.
FRIDAY UPDATE: Mayweather Jr. has been arrested in Las Vegas, ESPN.com reports, on a felony theft charge, following an allegation of domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend.
Mayweather was booked Friday, at the Clark County jail, ESPN.com reported. He is being held on $3,000 bail, and is alleged to have taken an iPhone belonging to his ex. His lawyer Richard Wright said, He did not commit any grand larceny, to the AP. Josie cant find her iPhone. Were attempting to find it or replace it. Well cooperate in the investigation. We expect to get the matter resolved.
TMZ, which shows Mayweathers mug shot, in which he looks pretty cheery, says that authorities wish to upgrade the charges to a domestic violence rap. See here: www.tmz.com/2010/09/10/floyd-mayweather-mug-shot-las-vegas-domestic-violence-photo-arrest/
