TOMORROW, Live on SHOWTIME, 11:45 p.m. ET/PT
NOTE: WEIGHTS (Sept. 30, 2010) – Tim Coleman tipped the scales at 139 3/4 pounds and Patrick Lopez measured 139 pounds during Thursday’s weigh in at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif.
Both coming off huge victories and riding impressive winning streaks, United States Boxing Association (USBA) light welterweight champion, Coleman (17-1-1, 4 KOs) of Baltimore, Md., will face two-time Venezuelan Olympian Lopez (20-2, 12 KOs) a 12-round junior welterweight main event on ShoBox: The New Generation tomorrow/Friday, Oct. 1, LIVE on SHOWTIME® (11:45 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).
Archie Ray Marquez and Juan “Chago Santiago both weighed in at 133 pounds. Marquez (9-0, 1 ND, 6 KOs) of Albuquerque, N.M., will meet Santiago (13-4-1, 8 KOs) of Denver, Colo., in an eight-round lightweight co-feature.
Coleman, 26, won his last start on a 12-round decision over former world title challenger and hometown favorite Mike Arnaoutis in New York on Dec. 3, 2009. The Roger Mayweather trained fighter has won three fights in a row since his only loss in October, 2008. The steady southpaw Lopez, 33, was impressive in his third-round TKO win against previously undefeated prospect Prenice Brewer in his last fight on Aug. 6.
The telecast will originate from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif., and will be promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC.
What the fighters had to say on Thursday:
TIM COLEMAN:
“This is my second lefty in a row, but that’s fine with me. Lopez is a more aggressive fighter, and that will work for me. That will suite my style.
“This (140 pounds) is a great weight for me. I feel stronger and quicker here.
“It’s been hard getting fights, so I’ll take whoever. I fight because I love it.
“I’ve been training with Roger (Mayweather) since I was 12 years old when I wan an amateur, but this is my first pro fight with him.
“I have a chin – I’ve never been knocked down.
PATRICK LOPEZ:
“The win over (Pernice) Brewer was huge for me. That’s a big step.
“We’re ready for Coleman. He’s the perfect opponent for us.
“There’s no doubt I’ll be close to fighting for a world title in 2011 with a win over Coleman.
“I’ve always had an aggressive style. It’s exciting.
ARCHIE RAY MARQUEZ:
“I was overly cautious in my last fight (win over Derrick Campos), but I stuck to my gameplan.
“I’m hungry to get back in the ring and make a statement. I had a hand injury so I haven’t fought in a while, but I’m ready to get back in there.
“I always want to look good. I don’t care how I win. If the knockout comes, it comes.
JUAN SANTIAGO:
“There’s a good possibility there could be a knockout. This (133) is the perfect weight for me. My punches will do some more damage here.
“I like to be the aggressor. That’s just my style.
“I’ve never been knocked down before – knock on wood.
“I’m just going to fight my heart out. I’m not looking for the KO – if it comes, great, if not, I’m fine with that.
“I can’t wait to get in there and fight him. He’s been out of the ring for a while so he’ll be in for a surprise.
Curt Menefee will call the action from ringside with the Steve Farhood serving as expert analysts. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.
