Joseph Agbeko Injured, Scratched From Saturday Fight With Abner Mares
IBF bantamweight champ Joseph Agbeko was scratched because of injury from the Showtime mini-tournament main event, but the Saturday show at the Nokia Theatre in LA will go on, in modified form.
Foe Abner Mares (21-0) still wants to fight, and matchmakers are scouring the land for a replacement for the 31-year-old Ghanian. The fighter contracted a pinch nerve in his back Monday. Scuttlebutt is that he was having trouble making weight, and had been doing excess cardio to get to the desired weight. Tomoki Kameda, a 19-year-old Japanese fighter with an 18-0 mark, was said to be a possibility to meet Mares, but it looks like he passed on the chance.
The Vic Darchinyan-Yonnhy Perez semifinal is still a go, we hear.
