Orozco Bests Strachan Thursday Night in CA
COSTA MESA, CALIF.-San Diego’s junior welterweight prospect Antonio Orozco (10-0, 7 KOs) had little trouble against Hensley Strachan (5-9-1) of the Bahamas on Thursday night. After a few seconds of checking out Strachan’s offense, Orozco opened up with some heavy shots to the body and head. A left to the body of Strachan ended the night at 2:15 of round one by knockout. Orozco had been forced to cancel a previously scheduled fight but was stricken with food poisoning last month. He was poison for Strachan on this night.
In a junior flyweight bout Riverside’s Sindy Amador pressed the fight early and forced Lake Forest’s much taller Jessica Penne to retreat and fight off her back feet in the first three rounds. Amador’s combinations were landing up and down Penne’s body and the jab was jolting. Penne’s corner stopped the fight in the fourth round after several belts from Amador though it seemed she could have continued. It was Penne’s first boxing bout. She is a mixed martial arts fighter with eight wins and no losses but this is a different sport.
Miami’s Ozzie Alvarez (2-2) forced a tap out from Upland’s Daniel Mancha (2-3) with a rear naked choke at 2:28 of the first round of a mixed martial arts bout. Armenta started strong with a judo throw for a take down but Alvarez proved stronger and turned things around immediately.
Tustin’s Paul Velarde (3-1-3) beat Compton’s Paul Green (2-2) after four rounds of a lightweight clash. Velarde’s quickness and sharp jabs were the difference. Though Green seemed to have more power he was frustrated By Velarde’s constant holding. Velarde finally broke out of fighting draws with this win.
La Habra’s Ricardo Garcia (2-1) used his extra experience as a pro to beat Bixby’s debuting Edgar Sanchez (0-1) in a four round junior welterweight contest. Sanchez started strong by pinning Garcia on the ropes but let him go free. After that, Garcia took over and shook Sanchez with a left hook in round three. Two judges scored it 39-37, a third judge had it 38-38 for a majority decision in Garcia’s favor.
Huntington Beach’s Mario Navarro (3-0) had a slow first round against Riverside’s Skylar Reider (1-2) and was on his back for most of the first round. No problem. In the second he caught Reider with a triangle choke and forced a tap out at 1:21 of the second round of the bantamweight MMA fight.
