One of the sport’s ultimate warriors, Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KOs) is known for his height, standing 6’ 7-1/2.” The 40-year-old Ukrainian has gone undefeated since ending a four-year layoff in 2008, starting with a victory over slugger Samuel Peter that brought him a heavyweight crown, followed by seven successful title defenses. Most recently, he scored a first-round knockout victory over previously undefeated 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Odlanier Solis in March. This 12-round fight marks the first time that Vitali, whose younger brother Wladimir holds a collection of heavyweight title belts, is fighting in Poland.
Coming off a unanimous decision victory over Kevin McBride in April, Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KOs) is on a hot streak dating back to 2007, having won his last 13 fights. The Zywiec, Poland native, who now resides in Jersey City, NJ, will enjoy a major hometown crowd advantage, and is an impressive 20-0, 14 KOs when fighting in Poland. Though ceding five inches in both height and reach to Klitschko, Adamek has overcome a size disadvantage before, most notably in April 2010, when he defeated Cristobal Arreola, despite giving away 30 pounds at the weigh-in. This will be his seventh career fight at heavyweight.
Later in the day, HBO visits Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City for a live 12-round featherweight rumble between Yuriorkis Gamboa (20-0, 16 KOs) of Miami and Daniel Ponce de Leon (41-3, 34 KOs), who trains out of Huntington Park, Cal. Both fought on HBO in March, when Gamboa looked sensational with a KO of Jorge Solis, while de Leon stumbled against Adrien Broner.
Adding to the action-packed day of boxing, episode #3 of the all-access reality series “24/7 Mayweather/Ortiz” debuts at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT).
