It’s a night of big action in the bantamweight division when HBO BOXING AFTER DARK: NONITO DONAIRE VS. OMAR NARVAEZ is seen SATURDAY, OCT. 22 (10:30 p.m. ET/PT) from the Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York. The HBO Sports team of Bob Papa, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. will be ringside for all the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.
Other HBO playdates: Sept. 23 (8:30 a.m.) and 24 (12:45 a.m.)
HBO2 playdates: Sept. 23 (4:30 p.m.) and 25 (11:00 p.m.)
Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KOs), from San Leandro, Cal., is a rising sensation, thanks to impressive ring speed and athletic ability. Placed high in the majority of pound-for-pound rankings, the 28-year-old hasn’t lost since his second pro fight, in 2001. Donaire made a spectacular HBO debut last February when he KO’d Fernando Montiel in the second round to take a bantamweight title, which he’ll defend in this scheduled 12-round, 118-pound fight.
Making his American debut, Omar Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KOs), who hails from Cordoba, Argentina, brings an undefeated record and extensive experience into the ring. This former flyweight champ and current super flyweight titleholder is stepping up in weight to take on Donaire. Fighting successfully in South America and Europe, Narvaez became a flyweight champion in just his 12th professional bout, and now hopes to make his reputation here in one of boxing‘s most explosives divisions.
The night of boxing action on HBO begins at 10:00 p.m. with the debut of the four-part all-access reality series “24/7 Pacquiao/Marquez,” as HBO Sports spotlights the spirited rivalry between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.
Prior to the live Donaire vs. Narvaez fight, HBO will revisit the Oct. 15 pay-per-view telecast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. HBO will air highlights of 52-year-old Dewey Bozella’s extraordinary pro debut versus Larry Hopkins; review the dramatic Antonio DeMarco-Jorge Linares lightweight battle by showing select rounds; and revisit the controversial Bernard Hopkins-Chad Dawson showdown with a replay of the action.
