James Toney, Age 43, Stops Bobby Gunn
James Toney is still enough of a pro to get it done against a certain level of foe, as the 43 year old boxer, weighing in at 248 pounds, stopped Bobby Gunn on Saturday night in Mississippi.
Toney, 248 pounds, nine pounds less than he weighed last February against Damon Reed, can still slip and duck and jab and launch mini combos, which he did against Gunn, who is most busy on the bareknuckle circuit these days. The Canadian-born New Jersey resident hurt his hand in round four, and could not come out for the sixth round. Gunn, age 38, was 210 pounds for the scrap.
With the win, Toney rises to 74-7-3. He won the vacant IBU title with the victory and makes noise that he still wants a significant fight, against a Klitschko or a Chris Arreola. A showdown against a 49 year-old Evander Holyfield would maybe be a better idea at this juncture. Toney stopped Holyfield in the ninth round when they battled in 2003. Toney, a former middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and cruiserweight titlist, weighed 217 on that night.
