Carlos Quintana Stops DeAndre Latimore in PPV Opener
DeAndre Latimore-Carlos Quintana kicked off the PPV portion of the Mayweather-Cotto undercard, from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Q looked to use his legs to make things hard for Latimore, who did the stalking in the first round of this junior middleweight scrap. Q came in 28-3, while Latimore was 23-3 entering. A slice appeared on Lat's left eye in the second, a round in which Q was a bit more active. A clash of heads did the damage. His jab was long and strong, and Lat wasn't cutting the ring off as he walked after him.
Q got more aggressive in the third; his confidence grew and he started to do the stalking. Q outlanded 26-12 in the fourth. In the fifth, Q looked even more confident, and ready to close the show. He hammered Lat to the floor, for good, at 52 seconds of the sixth. Ref Kenny Bayless stopped his count at nine, as Lat rose, wearily, looking out of it. This is as good as we've seen Q look since he took down Paul Williams in 2008, while Latimore's showing made you wonder why Mayweather Promotions signed him. The end came at 2:19 of the sixth. Q now has the NABO belt. Q went 108-328, to 55-237 for the loser.
