Charles Huerta Stops Tijuana's Arcos In Ontario, CA

Thompson Boxing Promotions LONTARIO, CALIF-Paramount's Charles Huerta used a ramrod left jab to batter Tijuana's Eduardo Arcos and eventually win by technical knockout in a junior lightweight battle on Friday.

Huerta needed a solid win to prove he still belongs as a serious contender and found Mexico's Arcos a tough customer at the Doubletree Hotel. The large crowd saw the local fighter break down Arcos and keep his place as a serious contender.

Huerta had a stiff jab going in the first round. Tijuana's Arcos was nearly dropped twice from walking into stiff left jabs. Other than the jab, Huerta didn't need to unload.

Arcos was the busier fighter in round two but busted his own nose by running into the top of Huerta's head from being too aggressive. Wide lefts and rights by the Tijuana fighter were fired to possibly give him the round. Huerta landed jabs and a solid right to the body.

Huerta had a big round four that all began with a solid left uppercut that snapped Arcos’ head back and spurt blood simultaneously. Some more stiff left jabs had Arcos looking in poor condition but he survived. But he couldn't survive round five as Huerta systematically dismantled Arcos with combinations and riveting left jabs. Arcos’ corner stopped the fight at the end of the round.

Other bouts

Allentown's Miguelito Diaz (9-0, 4 KOs) knocked down El Paso's Evaristo Primero (15-15-1) in the first round of a flyweight match but it wasn't an easy fight. Diaz was dominant in all of the six rounds but Primero's vast championship experience proved beneficial in keeping the young lion from total domination. In round five Primero went for broke but ran into a Diaz right cross and down he went. The bell rang but the Texan couldn't recover in round six and was pummeled. Primero fired a groin punch and referee David Mendoza halted the action. Meanwhile Primero's corner realized their man was working on only two cylinders and wisely threw in the towel to end the fight at 37 seconds of round six.

San Fernando's Rigo Flores (5-1, 2 KOs) pounded out a six round unanimous decision over Texas junior welterweight Hector Garza (3-7, 2 KOs). Flores is a non-stop punching machine and Garza had no answer for the constant barrage that never stopped. All three judges scored it 60-54.

Sylmar's Sergio Nunez (7-0-1, 4 KOs) pulled out a victory after falling behind Houston's Jesus Mendez (3-3, 2 KOs) with a last second knockdown in round six. That knockdown gave Nunez the extra points needed to beat Mendez who landed right after right. Mendez was knocked down in round three with a counter right. That same punch dropped him in the final round two.

Colombia's Daulis Prescott (24-1, 19 KOs) powered through the rock jaw of Mexicali's Jose Cota (15-8-1, 11 KOs) to win by knockout in round three of a junior lightweight battle. Prescott, the younger brother of Breidis Prescott, hit Cota with every punch in the book until landing a left uppercut, then a right uppercut and finally a right cross sent Cota to the mat. He couldn't beat the count at 2:40 of round three.

San Pedro's Isaac Zarate (4-0) floored Corpus Christi's Jeremy Longoria (3-2, 1 KO) five times in winning a convincing four round bantamweight battle 39-31 according to three judges. It was southpaw Zarate's left hand that did all the damage. Longoria never wavered in the fight and didn't look overly hurt, but just couldn't figure out the one-two combination coming from the left side. Zarate was deducted one point in round one for hitting Longoria while he was down.

In a junior welterweight battle of southpaws it was San Diego's Giovanni Santillan (3-0, 2 KOs) walking away with the knockout victory against Laredo, Texas’ Alberto Espinoza (1-2). A straight left to the body crumbled Espinoza at 58 seconds of round one.
