Olympians & Randy Caballero Headline Fantasy Springs Casino Card
Southern California’s bantamweights are rising up the ladder worldwide.
One of those spiraling up the bantamweight ladder is Coachella’s Randy “El Matador” Caballero.
Caballero (18-0, 10 Kos) faces Puerto Rico’s Miguel Robles (12-2-2, 5 Kos) in a bantamweight challenge set for 10 rounds on Saturday July 20. The Golden Boy Promotions fight card takes place at Fantasy Springs Casino. Fox will televise.
After the main event featuring Frankie Gomez was lost due to an injury to the East L.A. welterweight, the semi-main event was bumped up to the front stage.
Once again the flashing fists of Caballero will benefit from a hometown crowd as he looks to impress a Southern California crowd already accustom to world championship bantamweight action. Abner Mares, Leo Santa Cruz and a few others have spoiled the local boxing crowds who have seen the crème de la crème.
The former amateur star has faced some heavy duty competition including Luis Maldonado who he stopped in the fourth round. Caballero, 22, is eager to fight the best. “It’s the only way to show what I can do,” he said after his last win in January.
Beating Puerto Rico’s Robles could set him up with Santa Cruz if his promoter plans to go that route.
Joining Caballero on the fight card will be a trio of U.S. Olympians from the 2012 team.
Junior featherweight Joseph Diaz (5-0, 3 Kos) is the most advanced of all the former Olympians and fights Luis Cosme (8-2-1, 3 Kos) another Puerto Rican in a four rounder. Diaz took the fight on short notice after Gomez dropped out.
“We just got the call,” said Ben Lira, who works Diaz’s corner. “Joseph is always ready.”
The southpaw slugger reminds many of a left-handed Mares. He has strength, speed and technique.
Middleweight Terrell Gausha (4-0, 2 Kos) has impressed many so far as a professional. This will be Gausha’s first fight against an opponent with a winning record. Julio Garcia (6-4, 3 Kos) is another fighter out of Puerto Rico.
Junior middleweight Errol Spence (6-0, 5 Kos) is the third former Olympian looking to get experience in the prize ring. He meets Eddie Cordova (4-4-1) in a four round bout. This will be Spence’s seventh fight in a year.
In another middleweight fight Angel Osuna (10-3-1, 6 Kos) of Coachella meets Christian Nava (2-3-1) of Utah in a six round bout.
Two other fights are planned featuring heavyweights and junior lightweights. For more information call Fantasy Springs Casino at (800) 827-2946.
