Broner Beats Molina On First PBC on NBC Show

So many love to hate him and wish that John Molina had shut his mouth and put him on his can, man, but it was not to be in the first primetime boxing broadcast on NBC in 30 years.

Nope, Adrien Broner, the braggadocious Cinci-based boxer was too slick, too skilled, too fast for the Cali based underdog, who held the hope of the home run toss till the final bell.

Broner, looking to clamber his way back to the bigger stages even than this after Marcos Maidna humbled him a tad at the end of 2013, boxed smartly and enjoyed the tallies of the judges after ten rounds. By a UD10 Broner was the victor, to the chagrin of fans of old school values and Molina’s humble charm.

Broner thanked God after, when he chatted with Kenny Rice. He said he just looked to win, and the last time he fought for the crowd, and that resulted in a loss. They booed AB for that statement. Molina only landed 54 shots, an anemic number, and testament to AB’s defense and skill.

Sugar Ray Leonard helped Marv Albert on the call, at the MGM Grand, in this promotion hatched by Al Haymon, the former music magnate who is looking to be the disruptor in chief, time-buying his way on multi platforms as he bids to get boxing back to a place of prominence.

Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions series showed off Broner (now 30-1) in their first bout, and the righty 140 pounder, except for a third round where he ate some, showed off his hand speed edge. He slipped, dipped, jerked, popped a jab, went low then high, as Molina was a step behind. Molina (27-6), coming in off back to back losses, one of which was in the 2014 Fight of the Year, looked to land hard right bombs. But Broner saw them coming and mostly easily slipped them. Broner hooked a bunch, held some when he wanted a break, and generally had Molina looking a bit perplexed. The jab was the thing for Broner; he’d snap it, and Molina couldn’t get set to throw. We saw the occasional uppercut, and Broner, who was a pound over on Friday, didn’t gas, as some thought he might, if indeed making 140 was too draining.

The fans didn’t dig it when he ran around as the clock ticked down in the tenth, as waved his hands. The two men hugged after, and Broner heard boos. ABOUT BOOS…
