Povetkin Steamrolls Perez in Moscow
Alex Povetkin had his way with Mike Perez in Moscow on Friday, scoring a TKO1 win over the Cuban, who didn’t look at all engaged from the start.
Povetkin gets a crack at the belt now held by Deontay Wilder, and Wilder puts it up for grabs June 13, against Eric Molina in Alabama.
A down the pipe right buzzed the lefty Perez in round one. His pawing jab didn’t bother the Russian in the least, and he unloaded with power right away. When Perez backed up off the right, Povetkin slid forward, sensing a finishing pop. He feinted, feinted, hurled a right hook, and down went Perez, on his butt, at 1:46. He rose, on iffy legs and using unfocused eyes. A
clipping right sent Perez, who looked intixicatedly out of it, crashing to the ropes and the ref waved off the proceedings, at 1:28. Povetkin didn’t need to get up a sweat, and in fact didn’t perspire, and for that matter, neither did the Cuban, who looks to, maybe, be at the end of the round. The 35-year-old Povetkin is 29-1, while the 29-year-old lefty is 21-2-1. He’s 1-2-1, in his last last four, and before that, he “won” a UD10 over Magomed Abdusalamov, a victory which left Mago brain damaged, and Perez, maybe, permanently scarred mentally, for what his fists had done.
