Rumors Playing Out, Mayweather Takes Issue With Ellerbe’s Performance
The rumors were kicking around since right after fight night that there was trouble in Mayweatherville, most specifically the part having to do with Mayweather Promotions, and some of the duties performed by right hand man Leonard Ellerbe.
Ex right hand man if you read the latest news up on Fight Hype, Floyd’s preferred outlet to drop news. Mayweather told writer Ben Thompson that, “Once people start making power moves without communicating with me, then I think it’s time for us to move our separate ways. I mean, I’m glad the fight is over with, but I think when May comes around and you guys see All Access in May, I’ll have a totally new team and probably a totally new staff. We may make a lot of changes in my team, but Al Haymon ain’t going nowhere.”
The “people” he was referring to, it is clear, seems to be Ellerbe, who he said screwed up ticketing for Mayweather’s family to the Sept. 13 clash against Marcos Maidana. Also, Floyd said he’s no longer on the same page as Ellerbe, who rose up from security man to a place where he was taking a lead role at pressers and on matters concerning the growing stable of Mayweather Promotions.
I was told about the possible split Monday and reached out to proper channels, people in the know, on Monday. I was told that high level people were asked and that the rumor was dismissed as just that. I re-asked another in the know person Wednesday and was again told that there was no “there” there. Now, the Fight Hype story has Floyd taking issue with defending a 147 and 154 belt against Maidana, and blaming Ellerbe for that move, but he stops short of declaring that Ellerbe is being dumped. “People outgrow each other,” he said regarding Ellerbe, which certaintly sounds like divorce language.
Reading between the lines, it looks like there was a Mayweather blowup after the fight, and people were thinking and hoping that it would blow over, emotions would dwindle, feathers would get unruffled. Seems like the feathers are staying put in place…
“I just want to be able to communicate with anybody that I work with,” Mayweather told Thompson. “Once people start making power moves without communicating with me, then I think it’s time for us to move our separate ways.”
People are speculating that maybe Floyd will be asking Richard Schaefer on board, should Schaefer be able to extricate himself from his Golden Boy contract, which may last until 2018. If so, that would make sense that Floyd is now finding fault with Ellerbe’s management style. From a business standpoint, it’s a no brainer to have Schaefer running MP. From a loyalty standpoint, eh…
Readers, what say you. Put on your thinking caps and tell us how you think this all plays out.
