Does Kovalev ACTUALLY Have No Plan To Fight Hopkins?
You may have heard Sergey Kovalev telling media that he has no plan, no strategy to fight Bernard Hopkins on Saturday night.
I approached his trainer, John David Jackson (both seen above in David Spagnolo photo) , on Tuesday, at Gleason’s Gym, and asked him about that. He smiled, broke into a big grin actually and said, “Sergey likes people to think that (there is no strategy), that’s alright, that’s OK.”
JDJ, a former 154 and 160 champ, said he’s watched Hopkins-Jones I, vs. Karo Murat, Beibut Shumenov, Chad Dawson II and Joe Calzaghe and the first five rounds of the win over Jean Pascal to properly scout Hopkins, who he actually helped corner for awhile a few years back.
“Watch the last two and a half fights he lost, it’s to anyone that’s athletic, young and strong. They got him. Murat, Shumenov and Tavoris Cloud, they were robotic.”
OK, but some folks think your guy is sort of robotic, John David…
“I want Bernard to think Sergey is robotic. That’s what I want him to think. When you watch Sergey fight, knock a guy out, it’s not a one punch knockout. He thinks. He’s dissecting all the time, he’s working. He’s breaking you down. He hits you with one shot at the end.”
I probed the tutor, a Colorado native who fought and lost to Hopkins in 1997, his third to last fight, and asked what it is he could maybe see on Saturday that will have him a bit worried. Is it, maybe, if he sees Kovalev falling into Hopkins’ pace?
“Yeah,” he agreed. “If I see that, I have to wake him up real quick. If he wants to keep being a champion, living the life he’s living, he’ll wake up. Whatever I tell my fighter to do, he does it.”
