“Rocky” Weigh In For Algieri, But He Gets Over Mini Scale-Fail in Macau

He had a “real Rocky” weigh in, did Chris Algieri, who needed about 40 minutes to get under the 144 pound max on Friday early evening (US time) in Macau, the day before he was set to take on The Fighting Congressman, Manny Pacquiao on a card put together by Top Rank, portions of which will run on HBO PPV.

The Long Islander stepped on the scale and his face or body language didn’t register shock or amazement when emcee Michael Buffer told the world that the hitter he annouced as “The Fighting Collegiate” weighed 144.4 pounds. As his team, including promoter Joe DeGuardia, and co-promoter Artie Pelullo, conferred with Top Rank exec Carl Moretti, Algieri took the scale mini-fail in stride. He posed for the crowd at the Venetian Macao, and then came back in a bit, sans clothing. This time he was 144.2. He disappeared for a spell, and given two hours to make the weight, he needed 40 minutes. This time, the third time, he was charmed; Algieri weighed 143.8, and the fight was a go.

Manny Pacquiao had no such drama; the Filipino icon hit 143.8 for the welterweight title holder.

After making weight, the 30-year-old New Yorker with the 20-0 mark said he was on target that morning on a real-deal scale, in fact, the official scale, but he theorized that when the scale was moved it shifted calibration. He was loose, and didn’t seemed overly stressed, and told media after that he would rather be a bit over, and do it this way, over being drained. “This is fight week, this is boxing,” he explained.

Algieri told me that, “I was under this morning. I wanted to be exact.”

Was he mildy irked? “Nope. Not even. All good and in the rear view,” he stated, emphatically.
