Golovkin Trainer Sanchez Predicts How GGG Will Break Down Murray

An unfortunate byproduct of the prolonged #MayPac negotiations has been the lack of focus on other fights, and fighters, and the way that so much hasn’t been happening in the fightgame arena as all of us, execs, writers, fans, etc, wait for the other shoe to drop.

WWFD. What Will Floyd Do is the mode we’ve been in to start the year, and it’s a shame. Yes, it is what it is, we have to accept this stasis because, after all, when it comes to be, it will be the biggest bout money-wise of all time, and will seem like it from a marketing perspective, even though, no, Ali-Frazier was and always will be The Fight….

That said, we don’t have to give in to the hysteria and the fascination and magnetic pull, not when we have a living, breathing, no-speculative scrap in our near-horizon sight-line. Gennady Golovkin, the kind-faced but cruel fisted middleweight ace, gloves up Feb. 21, in Monaco, and on HBO, against solid Brit challenger Martin Murray.

That Golovkin wins is a foregone conclusion, not rightly so, arguably, but until he snags a bout against an Andre Ward, or Floyd Mayweather, or someone of that ilk, he will be seen as a lockdown winner in the run-up. We all know, though, that even locks get busted, get picked…so we must respect Murray and his game.

I checked in with Golovkin trainer “Honest” Abel Sanchez, the Cali based tutor, to get his take on what this clash could look like next weekend. “Gennady will test Murray with single shots in the first round,” he told me. “He will find his range and gauge Murray’s speed and plan. Second round, one and two punch combos along with a stiff jab controlling the pace. Murray will try and make a fight of it, but a couple of rounds of pin-point accurate punching by Triple G will force him to retreat too much, and go into his usual defensive mode. This will allow Triple G to pick his shots, and land a telling blow that will be the beginning of the end.”

Dig that, friends. I love it. Usually the trainer doesn’t want to share his foresight of what he thinks will go down. Bless Abel. He knows his kid is so bad-ass that he can send a copy of the playbook to the foe, and it won’t matter. Because the excellence of Trip’s execution will eliminate any edge gained by knowledge of what he plans to do come fight night.

Oh yes, I had to ask…did the married man Golovkin indulge in any Valentine’s Day ritual with his missus? “He celebrated by packing for the trip,” Sanchez told me, as the squad leaves for Monaco tomorrow (Sunday afternoon). “He is very focused on the task ahead of us.”

I had to chuckle. Yep, I’m betting Mrs. Triple G knows full well that her guy shares his heart with her AND the fight game, right? “The shared love is not a mistress, not the fight game per se, but it is DISCIPLINE and DEDICATION,” Sanchez stated.

Readers, look into your crystal ball and speculate on what you think occurs in that Monte Carlo ring…
