Happy 4th! Here’s An Idea Inspired By Independence Day–Floyd on Free TV

We are heading to July 4, also known as Independence Day here in America.

Traditionally, many hot dogs and hamburgs are consumed, many fingers are blown off in firework mishaps at home.

Many folks don’t stop and ponder the meaning of the day; this federal holiday celebrates our forming and passing of our Declaration of Independence…basically, when we dumped gal-pal Great Britain and proclaimed we’d be better of single, playing the field.

In honor of this holiday, I have a suggestion, on how to make it boxing themed. This particular suggestion is aimed especially at the suits who run the Floyd Mayweather show, and Floyd Mayweather. Floyd, Al Haymon, Stephen Espinoza, and anyone else with their hands on a power lever, here’s my suggestion: What say you declare your independence from the most understandable inclination to do things as they’ve been done before, and instead of placing Floyd’s next fight, in September, on pay-per-view, what say you pull a firecracker of a move instead.

Put the Floyd vs. TBA fight on free TV.

Put it on CBS.

I know, I know, this is the boxing business…it’s about making money.

Of course it is…this is America, I’ve lived here for many moons, I’m grossly familiar with our reverence with profiteering. Often, I’m even on board with it, when it isn’t so craven, so relentless, so pathologically driven….But hear me out.

The last Floyd PPV stunk out the joint.

Billed as the Fight of the Century, it wasn’t even the fight of the night. I saw more trading and ferocity in a street brawl on the strip in Vegas late-night on May 2 than I did in #MayPac.

So…you’re not going to give a money back guarantee because the fight was sadly absent of ebb and flow and drama and trading and the like.

Instead, how about you acknowledge that fans ponied up hand over fist over fist over hand, and as payback, give us a “freebie?”

Mayweather vs. Berto…or Khan…or heck, Mayfield…on CBS…in prime-time.

I know, less moolah will be made. But, sometimes that isn’t the worst thing in the world. Sometimes leaving some on the table is the right thing to do. Sometimes you don’t try and squeeze every drop of blood from the stone/the boxing fans, those who have to dip into the thin wallet so consistently in order to watch the best fare.

Putting the event on network TV would cause an explosion of goodwill, and after pulling in something like $600 million off #MayPac, I think the time is right to make revenue generation second on the To Do list for the next Floyd fight.

I know, I know, I sound like Yankee Doodle Dunce to many of you all.

That’s OK…

Please consider the move, the mixture of exposure, and humility and goodwill and focus of giving the fans their moneys worth would net a long term gain perhaps not measured in money. What a happy holiday for a boxing fans if you guys went outside the box, and blew up the current model, with a ‘Floyd on free TV’ extravanganza!
