Sugar Shane Mosley Battling on Two Fronts

Start the ball rolling. Sugar Shane Mosley’s back in town.

Pomona’s greatest champion in a small town known for developing world champions will be returning to the boxing ring.

Mosley, a former lightweight, welterweight and super welterweight world champion, returns to face Nicaraguan bad boy Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga at the Inglewood Forum on Aug. 29. The Mosley Promotions fight card will also be on pay-per-view.

Working with Mosley as trainer will be his dad Jack Mosley as they re-unite and this time bring along Shane Mosley Jr. too.

With a slash and flash style that many likened to the original Sugar Ray Robinson, the fighter from Pomona has been one of the sports few fearless fighters. If you’ve seen Mosley perform then what you remember is a warrior graced with speed, agility and surprising power.

After nearly two years removed from his last fight against Australia’s Anthony Mundie, Sugar Shane has not retired and formally returns to the wars.

“I wasn’t sure I was going to retire or not,” Mosley said by phone. “Now that I rested, I feel a lot better.”

Injuries happen to all athletes once they hit their 30s and 40s. It’s a fact of life. When Mosley met Mundine he was fighting a full-fledged super middleweight.

“The thing with Mundine, he was a lot bigger than me and he put stress on my back. I should have been fighting at 147,” Mosley said. “But maybe we will revisit that fight again.”

One fighter he’s revisiting now is Mayorga who brutally engaged with Mosley back in 2008 and recently in various loaded verbal exchanges on social media. One thing led to another and soon the fight was on. But once he nailed down a date the Pomona speedster discovered what others in the boxing business are finding out…Premier Boxing Champions bumped him out of his preferred venue.

“We had the Staples Center first. We put it on hold. Then, we didn’t know what if we’re going to do the Forum or the Staples Center,” said Mosley. “Two days later Al Haymon had it. They (Staples Center) go for the biggest bidder, so Al Haymon (PBC) must have put more money down.”

Instead of folding, Mosley did what all fighters do…he fought back. The Pomona boxer decided to move forward and keep the fight card but stage it at the Inglewood Forum. He’s moving forward on all fronts including in the promotional angle.

“I have my own boxing promotions and that’s what we’re going to use to promote this fight,” Mosley said. “When I fought (Manny) Pacquiao I used my own promotion company as the co- promotion.”

So on August 29, Mosley will be going toe to toe with Mayorga and also with Haymon’s PBC fight card.

“You want to fight, let’s fight,” Mosley says.
