Crawford A Considerable Favorite Over Jean TONIGHT
Let’s be honest. Kid got kinda lost in the #MayweatherPacquiao shuffle.
Not totally, he’s had one fight this year. But for the 2014 Fighter of the Year, 2015 has been a “stay busy, make money, wait for the big one” year.
A win over Thomas Dulorme, and now Dierry Jean is in front of him. Neither are seen a A grade scrappers…
Terence Crawford is undeniably a talented pugilist. He ticks all the boxes you want: strength, speed, power, stamina, mobility, attention and respect of craft…
Tonight, in Omaha, he shows another trait, that of being a popular attraction. Masses will swarm to the arena to see him likely win a UD over challenger Jean, a Canadian resident seeking to pull off a pretty massive upset in this 140 pound title tangle, which screens on HBO, after the replay of the Gennady Golovkin-David Lemieux scrap from Oct. 17.
2016 will not be a placeholder year for “Bud.”
He’s at the top of the heap to be Manny Pacquiao’s next, a plan promoter Bob Arum told me about days before #MayPac. Would Manny really want to fight such a skilled and speedy and youth-y foe as Crawford in his maybe last fight? We shall see…
As for tonight, you can expect to see a patient pugilist get a sense of what’s in front of him. A rapid-fire combo will stun Jean, and once hurt, Crawford has shark in his blood, he wants to end the affair. He has pop in both hands, uses the whole canvas, goes to head and body. His ambidexterity will trouble Jean; he can go lefty and righty, and his jab is solid from either stance. Jean, meanwhile, comes in hungry, believing he can win. He has good balance, but his hand speed will pale in relation to the Nebraskans. Dropping his hands will maybe hurt him. He too knows he can score points real and not as tangible by going to the body. Lead rights that score on lesser won’t play with Crawford.
A Jean win would be a massive upset, I think…but we shall..see..how it goes.
Boxing, theater of the unexpected. HBO is your platform provider tonight.
