Jose Roman Pursues Championship Dream – Ever since lacing up the gloves as a professional boxer Jose “Gato” Roman had championship dreams.

It was a dream he shared with his recently deceased father who passed away after complications following surgery. That was mere weeks ago.

“We have to move forward,” said the 28-year-old from Garden Grove, Ca. “The family is good, we’re all trying to do our own thing.”

Roman (22-1-1, 15 KOs) encounters Mexico’s Bernardo Gomez Uribe (16-6, 11 KOs) on Friday at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario. The Thompson Boxing Promotions event is Roman’s second fight in two months. He relishes the activity.

“It’s a lot better (to fight often) because economically it’s a lot better. You can take care of your family,” said Roman about prizefighting on a regular basis. “If you keep active and don’t struggle with any weight it’s easier to burn off all the fat a lot easier.”

Most of the slender fighter’s wins come via knockout. Roman uses his length, height and crackling power to neutralize his opponents’ advantages. And when he finds the weaknesses he strikes quickly.

In his last fight, a clash of heads angered the Garden Grove lightweight/super lightweight. Though it may or may not have been intentional, Roman wasted no time in eliminating his last opponent. He has that kind of finishing power.

Roman’s next opponent is a total mystery to him.

“I know nothing about Gomez. I even tried Googling him. Nothing,” said Roman casually. “You got to be able to adapt to any style anyway. We always spar with different styles.”

Gomez Uribe, 26, hails from Guadalajara and packs knockout power too. Most of his competition has been against top prospects in the super featherweight level. But any mistake by an opponent can be all Gomez Uribe needs with most of his wins by knockout.

Roman knows each win leads him closer to a title fight.

“It’s been a great three years. Little hiccups but nothing that can’t be resolved,” said Roman of his title chase. “I have to win or become an opponent for upcoming fighters.”

Erick Ituarte (13-1, 2 KOs) who fights out of Santa Ana, Ca. meets Tijuana’s Daniel Ramirez (11-3, 5 KOs) in a featherweight match set for eight rounds. Ituarte fights aggressively and faces a good strong opponent in Ramirez.

Undefeated heavyweight LaRon Mitchell (12-0) meets former contender Epifanio Mendoza (42-22-1, 36 KOs) in the co-main event. Also, Manuel Mendez (11-1-1), Rudy Garcia (1-0) and Eridanni Leon (2-2) are all scheduled to fight on Friday. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For more information call Thompson Boxing (714) 935-0900.
