L.A. fight result Sept. 3, 2017

LOS ANGELES-A battle for the California state super bantamweight title saw Luis Rosales out-perform Ricardo Cuella over six rounds to win by majority decision on Saturday. Every round was closely contested.

West Covina’s Rosales (6-1-1) inspired by a large crowd carrying posters of his face made a point to out-punch L.A.’s Cuella (5-1) in every round before more than 500 people at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.

Rosales pressed Cuella into a defensive mode from the opening bell until the final round. Stiff jab, combinations and a constant attack kept Cuella fighting on his heels. It was a position he just could not reverse.

Though Cuella had some moments his attacks mainly consisted of one punch. It became a constant theme that allowed Rosales to maintain the advantage. One judge scored it 57-57 a draw but the other two saw it 60-54, 59-55 for Rosales who becomes the new California super bantamweight champion.

In the super bantamweight semi-main event South Gate’s Adelaida “La Cobra” Ruiz (2-0) wasted no time going on offense against Hawaii’s Haley Pasion (1-2). A slashing two-fisted attack sent Pasion backward for most of the first round. Ruiz was unrelenting with her combinations and forward movement, but Pasion did not panic.

Pasion opened the second round with a more aggressive approach but saw the faster Ruiz reverse the momentum with another feverish display of combination punching. Though Pasion was never hurt badly, she could not force Ruiz to retreat. Instead the Southern Californian used slight movement to create angles and space before returning to attack mode.

After four rounds of almost nonstop punching, all three judges voted unanimously in favor of Ruiz 40-36. It was her second win in less than a year. The featherweight formerly was an amateur boxing star who hung up her gloves nine years ago to maintain a family. But now she has returned.

A battle between debuting super lightweights saw Misael Elias win by stoppage over Rahjes Narine at 2:13 of the second round. Elias used a left uppercut that staggered Narine then followed up with a six-punch onslaught that forced referee Zach Young to halt the fight.

In a welterweight clash Alan Moreno (1-0) won his pro debut by knockout of John White (1-1) at 28 seconds of the third round. A furious exchange was stopped by referee Krysti Rosario and ruled a knockout win by Moreno. A rematch could be in store.
