Jared Anderson Released on Bond Following His Arrest in a Toledo Suburb

Jared Anderson was arrested in the wee hours of the morning today (Monday, Nov. 6) in the lakefront Toledo suburb of Oregon, Ohio, and reportedly spent more than eight hours in jail before being released on bond. Anderson was charged with DUI and with being in possession of a firearm while under the influence.

In a story credited to Toledo’s WTOL newsroom, Anderson was stopped for going 55 miles per hour in a 40-mph zone. The arresting officer detected the odor of marijuana in Anderson’s vehicle and the odor of alcohol on Anderson’s breath. An open container of Don Julio tequila was found in the vehicle, as was a handgun in the locked glove compartment. The story did not mention if Anderson was traveling alone.

Jared Anderson, whose current record is 16-0 (15 KOs) is one of only two American boxers listed in the top eight of all four major sanctioning bodies. The other is Deontay Wilder who at age 38 is 15 years older than the fast-rising Anderson. The WBO, which has an especially warm relationship with Anderson’s promoter Bob Arum, lists Anderson at #2 in their current rankings. The Toledo boxer, whose nickname is “Big Baby,” has been called the heir to the throne occupied by Tyson Fury by no less an authority than Fury himself. He and the Gypsy King sparred extensively at the Top Rank gym prior to Fury’s two fights with Wilder.

Anderson has become known for his creative ring walks. In his twelfth professional fight, he wore prison garb with his hands and feet shackled, ostensibly to call attention to the plight of an older brother incarcerated in prison, Adam “Dub” Anderson, who at age 20 was sentenced to 22 years behind bars for aggravated robbery and involuntary manslaughter stemming from his role with three co-defendants in a fatal 2013 home invasion.

Jared “Big Baby” Anderson is the second prominent boxing personality to find himself in trouble because of a gun-related matter in the last few months. On Oct. 3, Terence Crawford’s  trainer Brian “BoMac” McIntyre was released from custody in Manchester, England, where he had been arrested when a handgun and ammunition were found in his checked luggage as he awaited his Sept. 3 return trip to the United States.

McIntyre was interviewed by ESPN’s Mark Kriegel during Top Rank’s Oct. 14 card in Rosenberg, Texas. “It’s common for us Americans to carry guns,” he told Kriegel, while acknowledging that he owned several firearms, one of which he keeps in his vehicle as protection.

Jared Anderson last fought on Aug. 26 in Tulsa where he scored a fifth-round stoppage of journeyman Andriy Rudenko. He does not have another fight scheduled at this moment. His hearing is slated for 9 am on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Anderson purportedly passed a breathalyzer test, so it’s a fair guess that the charges will be reduced.
