Garcia-Malignaggi Topping Aug. 1 Brooklyn Card; Jacobs To Meet Mora?

Brooklyn is emerging as the borough for boxing in NYC, it seems, with another card slated for the borough of kings on April 1.

Danny Garcia, a perennial visitor to Barclays Center, will again top a card there, this time against Brooklyner Paul Malignaggi, a source informs us.

Garcia holds a 140 pound strap, which he’ll not defend against the crafty vet, who is on the comeback trail, after losing his last tussle, to Shawn Porter.

I’m thinking Garcia is stepping to 147, and wants to see how comfy he is there. Then, if he does well, maybe we see him against a burlier 147, like a Keith Thurman. Paulie was to fight May 23, but got cut in sparring, so his fight with Danny O’Connor got scrapped. This is a tougher test, higher stakes, higher pay, riskier too, for a guy who endured brain trauma against Porter. That’s the way Paulie likes it, he’s a risk taker at heart…He will have to coddle the eye so sparring will be slightly less freewheeling heading to Aug. 1 than maybe he’d like…

Also on the card will be WBA 160 pound champ Daniel Jacobs. No, he won’t be fighting the face-off which I was hoping for, which seems to make mucho sense, against fellow fast-twitch muscled pugilist, Peter Quillin. His foe is still TBD. (August doesn’t usually get great A side vs. A side-packed cards, think about it, a lot of people are doing other things.)

Sergio Mora has volunteered to take a crack, and ESPN’s Dan Rafael, first to this news, reported that Matthew Macklin, an Irish-Brit who trains in Spain, might get the call. I’m hearing that someone other than Macklin might have inside track, though, so stay tuned on the TBA foe…Indeed, I touched base with “The Latin Snake” Mora Thursday night, and he sounded optimistic that he’ll pit his slickness ‘n skills against the Brooklyner Jacobs.

“I know I’m in the running,” Mora told me. “They told me be ready last week, that it looks like it’ll be Jacobs for July 25 or Aug 1. Still no confirmation.” But he’s upbeat on his chances…

Tureano Johnson, a bomber promoted by Gary Shaw, would love to grapple with Jacobs, so feel free to add his name to the mix. He told me his promoter asked the WBC to set in motion an eliminator between Tureano and Jorge Heiland, so Johnson is waiting word on that disposition. Politics, Tureano noted, might make it hard to make him vs. Jacobs, but “I would love to fight Jacobs!”

Johnson continued: “The sanctioning bodies need to be more involved in this. It’s not enough to only have mandatories for championship fights. They should be more involved in having top 15 fighters fight each other. If you’re ranked and in the top 15 and won’t fight anyone else ranked you should be out of rankings!

“It would help fighters like me build a resume or be exposed!”

The scraps will be running on ESPN, on primetime, on Saturday night.
