Mayweather-Khan Would Be The Ultimate Con

Published

on

Prior to the fight Khan had been mentioned and is thought to be the frontrunner to be Floyd Mayweather’s next opponent. Mayweather is slated to next fight this coming September but it’s still up in the air as to who his opponent will be.

Against Algieri, Khan was hoping to impress and make a statement with his performance as to why he should get the next shot at boxing’s biggest star fighter, Floyd Mayweather.

Sadly for Khan, his showing against Algieri, in spite of the fact that he won by unanimous decision, is the best body of proof as to why Khan should not be Mayweather’s opponent this September.

Against Algieri, Khan looked wild at times and was continuously caught cleanly, especially with right hands. What would Mayweather do to Khan if he fought wildly and over-anxious? On top of that, Mayweather is one of the most accurate straight punchers in all of combat sports. He’d never miss Khan’s mug with his fast, accurate and perfectly timed right hands…..and that may be an understatement.

I know some think Khan’s speed and boxing ability would provide Mayweather a challenge, but I just don’t see it. Khan has plateaued and maybe is on the decline as a fighter. Mayweather would better Khan at every turn. He does everything better and is physically stronger and tougher. It’s not like Khan is faster or has a higher boxing aptitude, and lest we not overlook that Algieri, with his eight knockouts going into the fight, actually had Amir shook a few times during the bout. Mayweather would look like Sonny Liston once he opened up and started winging his best stuff Khan’s direction. Let’s face it, if you have interest in seeing Mayweather fight the talented, but limited Amir Khan, you’re not a throwback boxing fan or interested in seeing drama filled action packed fights. You can’t be. Actually, you’re a Mayweather fan-boy and are willing to throw your money away to watch a snooze fest. You are someone who only has interest in Mayweather winning and remaining undefeated.

While some fans may say they will watch the fight because they appreciate “the technical aspects of boxing” the truth is a fight between two technicians is not an intriguing without one having the ability to actually challenge the other in the ring. Khan was easy for Algieri to find and hit, he’d be a sitting duck for Mayweather. And I get the feeling that once in the ring, Khan would be in awe of Mayweather’s commanding presence from the onset. The skill set that Amir brings to the ring won’t be enough to challenge Floyd without the needed physicality to apply them. And sadly, Khan lacks the physicality to push Mayweather to do a single thing that he doesn’t want to.

The best argument that can be made for Khan to fight Mayweather is this: they’ve never fought. This doesn’t sound like much of a reason for them to fight. I mean, where’s the hook to grab you to plan your night around watching the fight? Especially knowing that Khan can’t win, probably won’t even compete, can’t hurt Mayweather and on top of all that, it’ll look like a Mayweather sparring session in which he jogs to the finish line untouched.

Perhaps the worst thing about Mayweather fighting Khan is the fact that it’ll be a PPV event. After being gouged to pay for Mayweather-Pacquiao, why would one pay for Mayweather-Khan? Maybe if it were on HBO or Showtime it might be worth a look. But that’s about it. I know I wouldn’t put off going to the shore with my wife or girlfriend and having a nice dinner, just so I can see the Mayweather-Khan fight live and in the moment. For what? Not when I know beyond all doubt that it’ll be hard on the eyes to watch and the outcome will never be in question.

During Mike Tyson’s run up to the title and for a brief period of his title reign, the outcome of his fights were never in doubt, and you knew that he was going to win. But it was still fun and exciting to watch. Mayweather is at the point now to where we know he’s going to win but his fights are no longer, if they ever were, exciting to watch. So why bother paying for something when you know how it ends and it won’t be thrilling or exciting to watch? Why?
