NABA Titlist Danny Roman KOs Robles in Ontario

Danny Roman KOs Robles – ONTARIO, CALIF.-Southern California has an abundance of ranked super bantamweights and one of them, Danny Roman, took charge on Friday with a knockout win over Mexico’s Ramiro Robles.

Roman (18-2-1, 6 KOs) delivered a knockout by body shot before a crowd of more than 1,200 at the Doubletree Hotel in the main event. The NABA super bantamweight titlist did what three other super bantamweight contenders were unable to do: win by knockout over Robles.

Mexico’s Robles (12-5-1) had managed to hear the final bell against Diego De La Hoya, Jojo Diaz and Oscar Negrete. That wasn’t possible against Roman who timed every move and combination from Robles and fired at the appropriate time.

After four rounds of probing the Mexican veteran’s defense, the NABA champion delivered a left and right to the unprotected body and down went Robles who was counted out at 1:55 of the fifth round.

“The fight went as I expected. Robles is a tough competitor, but I knew once I wore him down that I would have a shot at the knockout. I saw an opening in the fifth and was able to land some body shots that put him down for good,” said Roman. “It felt great to get my tenth straight win. I defended my NABA title for the second time. Everything is going in the right direction for me.”

Perhaps a match with one of the other super bantamweight contenders should be locked and loaded.

Other bouts

San Francisco’s LaRon Mitchell (11-0, 11 KOs) won by a strange knockout when he shoved Juan Dominguez (6-5, 4 KOs) to the ground after missing with a combination. Dominguez would not get up for more than 30 seconds though he was never hit with a punch. The heavyweight fight was called at 1:18 of the first round by referee Eddie Hernandez.

Hemet’s Fernando Fuentes (7-6) started quickly against Jorge Ruiz (7-3) of San Diego and never let up. He consistently out-punched Ruiz who did not get untracked until midway through the six round featherweight clash. After six rounds all three judges saw it 59-55 for Fuentes.

Salinas’s Rudy Puga (7-0, 6 KOs) pounded his way to victory by knockout over Mexico’s Alejandro Osuna (3-2) in a quick fight that featured few jabs. It was power versus power as Puga floored Osuna of Mazatlan with a right-left combination in the first round of their super middleweight clash. In the second round Puga seemed more aggressive but was caught early with a left from Osuna. After 30 seconds Puga seemed angry and attacked the body with a vicious left hook that left Osuna gasping on his knees. Referee Eddie Hernandez counted Osuna out at 1:48 of the second round.

Anaheim’s Miguel “Mero Mero” Trejo (4-0, 3 KOs) unleashed consecutive overhand rights that violently snapped back Tom Howard’s head. Referee Raul Caiz wisely stopped the fight at 2:28 of the first round though Howard (8-7, 4 KOs) of Miami probably could have continued. It was the impact of the blows landing flush that caused concern in the junior middleweight match.

Jhordy Ramirez (2-0) of Santa Maria survived a knockdown in the second round to win by unanimous decision over Tijuana’s Juan Carlos Diaz (0-2) in a bantamweight four-rounder. Diaz charged Ramirez in the second round and unloaded dozens of punches that led to a knockdown. Ramirez rallied in the next two rounds behind his numerous right hands that never seemed to miss. All three judges scored it 38-37 for Ramirez.
